Caring about the planet, nature and her residents, is what we value most.

From the moment we started building, to the moment we start receiving you as a guest, sustainability has been our priority. We are proud of the fact we received our Green Key Gold certificate in October 2023,  which is the largest sustainability mark for the tourism and leisure industry in the Netherlands.

Interior



Throughout the whole building, we are being as sustainable and eco-friendly as we possibly can. From windows which can’t be opened to prevent wasted air-conditioning energy, to matrasses which are toxins-free and not harmful to the environment. With all of the eco-friendly materials which were used during construction, to the many water and energy saving measurements, we are doing our part to keep the environmental impact as low as possible.

Atrium



The entrance flows into the atrium, where a range of atmospheres and informal zones unfold. Workshop of Wonders realized a sensual and vibrant hotel theater that recalls the former luxury of the Amsterdam School and Frank Lloyd Wright. Yet it is undeniably contemporary, a stylish oasis that never gets cluttered. In the middle of the atrium, a new, graceful spiral staircase towers to the two floors and hotel rooms. Gerrit Vos: ‘By making optimal use of the existing interior and adding a strategic layer to it, we created the unique atmosphere in the public spaces. For example, the golden slats of the new exterior facade will return inside.”

Food and Beverages



Eating food which is healthy for yourself is important, but eating food which is good as well for the environment is even better! In our kitchen, we follow the principles of the Dutch Cuisine, which means we only work with seasonal, local and healthy products. Furthermore, we bottle our own purified water, which reduces plastic waste tremendously. All our coffee and tea is UTZ certified and last but not least, our aim is to offer you as many Dutch spirits, beers and wines as possible!

Interior

Our building is designed to be as eco-friendly as possible, featuring carefully chosen materials and innovative solutions to minimize environmental impact. For example, our windows are designed to remain closed, reducing wasted energy from air-conditioning. Additionally, our mattresses are free from toxins, ensuring they are safe for both our guests and the environment.

By prioritizing eco-friendly construction materials and energy-efficient designs, we are committed to reducing our ecological footprint and contributing to a greener future. Our building has its own history too! Originally built in 1991 as a DHL office, then used by Swissport, it was transformed into The Florian Hotel between 2019 and 2021—choosing sustainability over demolition!

Cleaning and Maintenance

We carefully select our cleaning partners to ensure a safe and eco-friendly environment. Our housekeeping uses only ozone water, eliminating harmful chemicals and toxins in guest rooms and public areas while protecting both people and the planet.

Food & Beverages

In our kitchen, we use only seasonal, local, and healthy ingredients. Additionally, all our coffee and tea are UTZ-certified, ensuring sustainable farming practices that create better opportunities for farmers and their families. Our aim is to offer you as many Dutch spirits, beers and wines as possible!

To Good To Go

In the hotel industry, significant amounts of food are wasted every day. At The Florian Hotel, we are committed to reducing this impact. Since 2022, we are a proud partner of Too Good To Go, a platform that connects people with surplus food, to inspire action against food waste.

As part of this initiative, we prepare packages with fresh items from our Albert Heijn vending machine, ensuring that high-quality food finds its way to those who appreciate it, instead of being discarded.

Energy Storage System

We are the first hotel in The Netherlands to adopt a unique system of Energy Storage System that allows us to store surplus energy from our solar panels and reuse it during peak hours when the sun isn't shining, setting a new standard in sustainable energy innovation.

Our commitment to renewable energy is reflected in the solar panels installed on our roof, harnessing the power of the sun to generate clean electricity and reduce our reliance on non-renewable sources.

We optimize energy efficiency through a heat-recycling system integrated into our mechanical ventilation, allowing us to recover and reuse heat, reducing overall energy consumption.

Hotels for Trees

When a guest chooses to skip housekeeping and hangs the Hotels for Trees sign on their door, we plant a tree in return.

Thanks to this initiative, we’ve already planted over 5,000 trees — and you can always follow the progress on their website!

Dopper x The Florian: A Perfect Sustainable Match

In 2025, we proudly began a partnership with Dopper, one of the world’s most sustainable reusable water bottle brands—crafted right here in The Netherlands! Not only is Dopper Cradle to Cradle Certified®, but its beautiful design makes it a perfect gift or souvenir for our guests. 

This initiative encourages visitors to avoid disposable plastic bottles and instead use a durable, long-lasting alternative. 

At The Florian Hotel, we are committed to providing sustainable choices for our guests, and collaborating with Dopper is truly a perfect fit for our values! 

Besides the bottles, we are also proud to offer Dopper’s exclusive tap water refill station at The Florian Hotel—a rare feature available at only a select few locations in the Netherlands. We were honored to be eligible for this because of our recognition as one of the most sustainable hotels in the region. 

Guests and locals are welcome to stop by at any time to refill their bottles free of charge. A fun detail: the refill station is even designed in the same colors as our logo, which we absolutely love!

Stay Dry and Make a Difference

In the unpredictable and rainy weather of The Netherlands, umbrellas are an absolute must. That’s why we’ve partnered with DripDrop to provide personalized umbrellas, available for rent directly at The Florian Hotel. 

These umbrellas are made entirely from 100% recycled plastic, reflecting our commitment to sustainability. But that’s not all—your rental also makes a positive impact. For every umbrella rented, a tree is planted through the Eden Reforestation Project. Thanks to your support, we’ve already planted 287 trees in 2023, contributing to a healthier planet.

We Proudly Serve Purified Water

At The Florian Hotel, we are committed to sustainability and social impact. That’s why we proudly offer EcoTapwater, a sustainable alternative to traditional bottled water. This innovative system delivers purified, fresh, sparkling, and still water straight from the tap—eliminating the need for unnecessary transportation and reducing plastic and glass waste.



What makes it even more special is EcoTapwater’s mission to give back. For every EcoTapwater purchase, 5 liters of clean drinking water are donated to VDT Groups Shelter, supporting orphaned girls and albino children in Kenya.

Sustainable Energy & EV Charging

The Florian Hotel embraces smart energy solutions with Eaton’s Buildings as a Grid approach. By integrating two xStorage Compact battery energy storage systems, solar panels, and Building Energy Management Software (BEMS), we optimized energy use, enabling the installation of nine EV chargers. This system supports peak shaving, renewable energy production, and intelligent energy management, reducing carbon emissions by 15 tonnes per year.
